Abstract
The field of geology is inherently high-risk, largely due to its reliance on fieldwork and the potential exposure to both natural and human-made hazards. A recent study examining occupational injuries among Iranian geologists was carried out as a cross-sectional survey, collecting essential data through a questionnaire. This survey included responses from 91 Iranian geologists across governmental, private, and freelance sectors, gathering information on demographics, safety practices, preventive measures, and past occupational accidents. The findings reveal that a striking 45.6% of geologists have experienced occupational accidents. Key risk factors include being younger, having less than five years of work experience, operating in mountainous terrains, engaging in sampling activities, and lacking essential safety gear such as ropes, first-aid kits, helmets, and two-way radios. While merely completing Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) training did not lead to fewer accidents, it was linked to a decrease in the severity of injuries and the frequency of accidents. Geologists' safety involves by three main categories of factors: organizational, individual, and occupational. To lower the risk of accidents, adherence to established safety principles is crucial. Consequently, the study proposes a practical flowchart model designed for safe field operations, aiming to enhance safety practices in the geology profession.
