Kuh-e-Ahan is a high-standing single relief within a rather flat plain, which is located in the north of the Tabas block, near the intersection of the Nayband and Kalmard faults and there are great outcrops of fe-oxide, along with eastern-western faults and fractures in Kooh-e-Ahan area.. The present study uses structural and remote sensing methods to discover the mechanism for evolution of the Kuh-e-Ahan, and to understand style of mineralization in the mountain, emphasizing on the role of fractures and major faults. In our remote sensing approach, we used DEM data and Aster satellite images and their filtering in main directions to detect displacements and sudden offsets of lithologic units and changes in drainage patterns. In our field studies, we studied mechanism of the faults, emphasizing on the faults within the Kuh-e-Ahan mining district. The results show N-S faults (Nayband fault trend) and NE-SW faults (Kalmard trend) have a general right-lateral mechanism, and the E-W faults are left-lateral with a reverse component. Structural model developed in this study suggest that strike-slip displacement on conjugate fault provided the space required for ascend and development of hydrothermal mineral deposits within the mine district.

Gandom-Berian area, located on southern part of the Kavir-e Lut, covers an area around 480 km2 and morphologically is a covered messa by very dark basaltic lava flows. Their major minerals are olivine and clinopyroxene phenocrysts along with plagioclase microlites and their main textures are microlitic porphyry to glomeroporphiry with interestal to intergranular groundmass. The in line position of volcanic cones along the line of movements of Nayband fault show its effect on the formation of Gandom-Berian basaltic magma. The genetic realationship of these lava flows with deep seated lithospheric fractures as a result of Nayband fault, the presence of mantle xenoliths and alkaline nature of basalt all reveal a fast deep ascending of magmas. Based on geochemical analysis and occurrence of nepheline in the norm composition the Gandom-Berian basaltic lava flows belong to basanite-tephrite group. The investigation on Gandom-beriyan alkali basalts clearly shows their relationships to an intera-continental extensional environment. Low ratio of Ce/Nb, Th /Nb, U/Nb, Ba/Nb and High levels Zr with mean 234.81 indicate a none depleted asthenospheric mantle source the origin of Gandom-Berian basaltic lava flows. Enrichment and depletion of light and heavy rare earth elements respectively indicate the existence of garnet in the source rock.

In southeastern Tabas there is a 400 square kilometer area of Quaternary basalts, which is geologically located in Lut zone. According to petrographic studies and EMPA analysis, the textures of these rocks are generally porphyric and some times aphyric. The phenocrysts of these basalts are generally chrisolite, augite, and plagioclase (andesine to labradorite), which are embedded in a texture of plagioclase microlites and small blades of pyroxene. According to the diagrams of accumulative amount of alkaline against the amount of SiO2, the nature of the magma is alkaline to sub-alkaline. The reason for the sub-alkaline character of some of these rocks is that the alkaline magma has been contaminated with crust materials. One of the most important reasons for this is the reduction of niobium in rocks enriched with SiO2. The alkaline samples have normative nepheline and the sub-alkaline samples normative quartz. The studies of Nd and Sr isotopes have confirmed the crust contamination and also the source for early magma of basalts is the upper parts of mantle. Based on the field studies and tectono- magmatic diagrams, these basalts are of intercontinental type because of the activities of great fault of Nayband in Quaternary and separation in their cross point reaching the earth's surface.
