The role of North Tehran Fault in the creation of Central Alborz and Central Iranian Sedimentary Basins within Tehran- Karaj area

Abstract
The area under investigation constitutes part of the Alpine Mountain system, which is situated between Central Iran and Central Alborz in the north Iran.
In the southern sector of central Alborz thrust faults are present which are dipping towards the north. In relation to the principal thrust fault, the secondary faults development as well. The latter, probably related to the principal fault at depth. The relationship between the secondary faults with main faults are parallel or oblique and are divided into synthetic and antithetic types.
The onset of the North Tehran Fault was probably in Paleocene time, and this occurs as a secondary Musha- Fasham Fault. However, due to lack of data, it is not possible to assign the fault as an unquestionably active fault. But nevertheless, the North Tehran Fault became active about Eocene- Oligocene times, where by it was accompanied by differences in altitude between the South Alborz basin and the northern portion of central Iranian basin.
The relationship between the North Tehran fault with Musha- Fasham Fault is mainly oblique, that is why at the junction of the two faults, strike-slip occurs, as well as creation of a basin prior to the folding in the North Tehran Fault at the southern sector; and since then, each sedimentary basin in relation to the activity of the North Tehran Fault has taken its own evolutionary course.
